The island of Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in the South of the Aegean Sea, being the crossroad of three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. With a population of ~630,000 inhabitants, Crete extends within an area of 8.336 km2 and a length of 260 km, but its shore-length is 1.046 km! The crystal clear waters of this coastline along with its diversity, sometimes sandy and gentle and others rocky and wild, creates some of the most well-known beaches worldwide.
The island consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and Lasithi while the town of Heraklion is the capital of Crete. A high mountain range crosses the island from West to East, formed by three different groups of mountains: To the West the White Mountains (2.453 m), in the middle the mountain of Ida (Psiloritis-2.456 m) and to the East the mountain of Dikti (2.148 m). These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lasithi, Omalos and Ida,caves like Diktaion and Idaion cave, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria.
